Winter dry skin routine for face, body and lips

For dry skin in winter: wash with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, apply a hydrating serum on damp skin, seal it with a rich cream, use body lotion right after a bath, keep a lip balm handy, and wear sunscreen in the day.
Why skin gets dry in winter
Cold air holds less moisture, and indoor heaters and hot showers pull even more water out of skin. The skin's outer layer loses oils faster than it can replace them, so it starts to feel tight, rough or flaky.
The fix is not one product. It is a routine that cleans without stripping, adds water, and then locks it in.
Morning routine (3 steps)
- Cleanse: use a gentle face wash with lukewarm water. Pat dry, do not rub.
- Moisturise: while skin is still slightly damp, apply a cream. Damp skin holds moisture better.
- Protect: finish with sunscreen. Winter sun still causes tan and dullness.
Night routine (3 steps)
- Cleanse away the day's dust and sunscreen.
- Hydrate: 3–4 drops of a hydrating serum on damp skin.
- Seal: a rich cream or night cream on top.
Body and lips
- Apply body lotion within 3 minutes of a bath, while skin is still damp.
- Focus on elbows, knees, heels and shins, which dry out first.
- Lips have no oil glands of their own. Use a lip balm several times a day and before bed.
- Do not lick dry lips; saliva evaporates and leaves them drier.
What to avoid in winter
- Very hot water on the face.
- Harsh scrubs and peel-off masks.
- Skipping moisturiser because skin feels oily in the T-zone.
- Skipping sunscreen because it is cold.
When to see a dermatologist
If skin cracks, bleeds, itches badly or does not improve in two to three weeks, see a dermatologist. Some dryness is a sign of a skin condition that needs medical care.
