How to remove tan from face and hands, safely
The Glow By Natural team · 27 Oct 2026 · 5 min read
Tan fades as skin renews itself. Help it along with a gentle de tan face wash, a radiance serum, and daily SPF 50 sunscreen, and protect hands and arms the same way. Avoid bleach and harsh scrubs.
Why tan happens
When skin is exposed to sun, it makes more melanin to protect itself. That extra pigment is tan. Face, neck, hands and forearms tan first because they see the most sun.
Skin replaces its outer layer every few weeks, so tan fades naturally if you stop adding new sun exposure.
A daily routine for tan
- Cleanse with a de tan face wash that helps exfoliate dead skin gently.
- Apply a vitamin C serum in the morning for a brighter, more even look.
- Apply SPF 50 PA+++ sunscreen 15 minutes before going out, on face, neck and hands.
- Reapply sunscreen every 2–3 hours outdoors or after sweating.
- Moisturise at night.
Hands and arms
- Use sunscreen on the back of hands and forearms, especially while driving or riding.
- Wear full sleeves or gloves on long rides.
- Moisturise after washing hands.
What to avoid
- Bleach creams on the face.
- Lemon juice and baking soda directly on skin.
- Scrubbing hard every day.
- Expecting overnight results; tan fades over weeks.
How to stop new tan
Removing tan without sun protection is like mopping with the tap open. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade in the afternoon and covering up are what keep skin even.
